A pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in any one subject.

Applicants considered in terms of paragraph (c) of regulation 6 of the Admissions Regulations must be in possession of those qualifications and/or experience that would satisfy the Faculty Admissions Committee that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit. The eligibility of such applicants shall be decided by the University Admissions Board on the recommendation of the Faculty Admissions Committee, following an interview conducted by an interviewing board appointed for the purpose.

All applicants shall submit with their application a Police Good Conduct Certificate issued by the Commissioner of Police in terms of the Conduct Certificates Ordinance, and shall not be included in the Register established under the Protection of Minors (Registration) Act.

The BA (Honours) in Primary Education is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to become an effective and inspiring primary school educator. Through a combination of theoretical learning, hands-on experience, and reflective practice, you will develop an understanding of child development, curriculum design, teaching methodologies and classroom management. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to participate in workshops and engage in reflective practice and self-assessment to continuously improve your teaching abilities.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Primary Education – B.A. (Hons) - under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the foundational learning areas and subjects taught during the compulsory primary school age from Year 1 to Year 6.
  • Demonstrate that you can use appropriate search techniques to identify literature relevant to the profession.
  • Plan and provide a well-organised classroom environment, designed to stimulate the pupils.
  • Develop the right attitude to value, encourage and facilitate children's creative spirit.
  • Select strategies for teaching and learning appropriate to the subject, topic and pupils' individuals' requirements.
  • Work cooperatively in the classroom with other professionals and adults.

  1. Subject knowledge and understanding
    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the foundational learning areas and subjects taught during the compulsory primary school age from Year 1 to Year 6
    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the continuum of teacher education and the life-long learning journey of the teacher
    • Develop a strong image of primary school children as competent, able, agentic learners
    • Know how to contribute to the processes of curriculum development and school development planning
    • Know about the requirements of education for citizenship and encourage pupils to be active, critical and responsible citizens
    • Work co-operatively in the classroom with other professionals and adults,
    • Identify the ways in which additional support in the classroom can assist pupils' learning
    • Plan and provide a well-organised classroom environment, designed to stimulate the pupils
    • Manage and promote positive behaviour and adopt various assessment techniques
    • Select strategies for teaching and learning appropriate to the subject, topic and pupils' individual requirements
    • Demonstrate knowledge about international, national, and local guidelines on child protection and teachers' roles and responsibilities in this area
    • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the teacher's contractual, pastoral and legal responsibilities within a Primary school setting
    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the stages of child development which they are able to use to take account of their pupils' needs
    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main theories of learning
    • Use and adapt materials for learning and teaching to stimulate and challenge pupils
    • Develop the right attitude to value, encourage and facilitate children's creative spirit

  2. Intellectual development
    • Demonstrate that they can use appropriate search techniques to identify literature relevant to the profession
    • Demonstrate the ability to justify and substantiate an argument, using evidence as appropriate, and draw appropriate conclusions
    • Adopt a questioning approach to their professional practice and engage appropriately in professional enquiry and action research
    • Discuss the principles informing their view of education, the curriculum and professional practice, drawing on a knowledge and understanding of moral and religious values and philosophical ideas in a changing society

  3. Key/transferable skills
    • Encourage pupils to assess themselves and engage with them in dialogue about their progress.
    • Access and apply relevant findings from educational research
    • Demonstrate that they value and promote fairness and justice and adopt anti-discriminatory practices in respect of gender, sexual orientation, race, disability, age, religion and culture.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to promoting and responding to partnerships within the community

As a graduate in BA (Honours) in Primary Education, you will be able to pursue a fulfilling career as a primary school teacher in both public and private educational institutions. Additionally, you may also choose from roles such as a curriculum developer, education consultant, instructional coordinator, or educational researcher. If you would like to advance your studies, you may choose to enrol in a postgraduate programme, either locally or with a foreign institution.
